Project Summary

This is my senior thesis project. Over the course of 8 months, I created Sense. Sense is an exploration of the 5 senses as they relate to a person place or thing. In a digital world my hope is to inspire others to recognize the world around them through their senses. For my thesis, I focused on a place that has influenced me through its senses. I documented them and created a book.

Brand Anatomy

The logo is very simple. In my ideation for this logo, I noticed that each sense has 5 letters. The circles above each letter represent the 5 senses. Each sense has its own mark that is individualized and symbolic. I have used these marks to indicate a section change in the book.

The Book

As the first of many books from the Sense brand, I chose to document the 5 senses of the ocean. Each section is printed or interactive with a different material corresponding to each sense to create a more tactile and sensuous experience. Sight is printed on transparency paper. Smell has a faint scent of ocean mist. Sound is printed on tissue paper. Taste is printed on edible paper. Touch has been treated with a mod podge sponge texture.

The Show

For the show, I constructed 3, 12'x8' walls to create a space that felt more like a gallery setting. I hung spot lights above each sense poster and music of crashing waves playing for ambiance. As viewers would enter, they were greeted with an interactive display in which they could see, listen, smell, touch and taste the ocean. They then came to the focal point of the show, the book.
